Occupy Wall Street Retakes Zuccotti Park, Kicks Off 2012 Protests

Occupy Wall Street is back, baby.

OWS marked its six month anniversary on Saturday by storming Zuccotti Park, aka “Liberty Square,” in downtown Manhattan. You’ll remember that the 33,000 square foot park was the epicenter of the 2011 OWS movement. Within hours the group had retaken the park, with protesters surging in after sporadic clashes with New York City police.

NYPD meanwhile raced to send in reinforcements and crowd control, immediately shipping in metal barriers to surround and contain the park.

This is, then, the start of Occupy Wall Street 2012, and we have a lot to look forward to this year. The movement will undoubtedly seek to influence the national elections, while also continuing their assault on the Wall Street “establishment.” Still, though, no specific policy platform, policy solutions, or end game can be attributed to OWS 2012. The movement, then, only looks to continue where it left off in 2012.

The Purpose of Occupy Wall Street Is to Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street. What other political movement in modern times has won the sympathy and/or support of the majority of the American public—in less than two months? How did this happen? I think it was a revolt that has been percolating across the country since Reagan fired the first air traffic controller. Then, on September 17, 2011, a group of (mostly) young adults decided to take direct action. And this action struck a raw nerve, sending a shock wave throughout the United States, because what these kids were doing was what tens of millions of people wished they could do. The people who have lost their jobs, their homes, their “American dream”—they cathartically cheered on this ragtag bunch who got right in the face of Wall Street and said, “We’re not leaving until you give us our country back!”

Occupy Wall Street says this is why America is f*cked: US Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), minority leader of Committee on Environment, denies science; says man-made climate change is impossible because it says so in Genesis 8:22, and it’s “outrageous” to believe humans are “able to change what God is doing in the climate”

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) appeared on Voice of Christian Youth America’s radio program Crosstalk with Vic Eliason yesterday to promote his new book The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future, where he repeated his frequent claim that human influenced climate change is impossible because “God’s still up there.” Inhofe cited Genesis 8:22 to claim that it is “outrageous” and arrogant for people to believe human beings are “able to change what He is doing in the climate.”

It’s not just Rush: Occupy WAll Street says 98 advertisers now fleeing from all right wing radio shows

Rush Limbaugh gave the right wing talk radio industry juice, and he just might be the cause of its demise. 98 advertisers so far have jumped ship from Rush Limbaugh’s show and other right wing stations due to the fallout from his 4 day long misogynistic attack on a Georgetown coed.

Daily Beast reports on Occupy Wall Street, “There are already tangible signs that the three dozen national and local advertisers that have pulled their ads from The Rush Limbaugh Show are having a financial impact.”

Premiere Networks distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers — they quickly sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday.

Think Progress reports:

Premiere Networks is circulating a list of 98 advertisers who want to avoid “environments likely to stir negative sentiments.”The list includes carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm) and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway). As you’ll see in the note below, those “environments” go beyond the Rush Limbaugh show

Occupy Wall Street plotting spring chaos. Targets include DNC, NATO, G-8 summits.

Occupy Wall Street
A coalition of U.S. radical groups, including the Occupy Movement, are preparing protests to start in September, including the targeting of the Democratic National Convention that takes place that month in Charlotte, N.C.

The Occupy movement is likely to escalate months before the Sept. 3-6 event. A slew of extremist organizations, some tied to Obama, are preparing protests to coincide with major NATO and G-8 summits slated for Chicago in May.

Foreshadowing possible violent confrontations, some of the same radical trainers behind the infamous 1999 Seattle riots against the World Trade Organization have been mobilizing new protest efforts geared toward world summits.

The plans for the Democratic convention are posted on a central website, ProtestDNC.org. More than three dozen organizations, including labor, anti-war and so-called civil rights and immigrants rights groups are joining together to initiate a coalition.

The group calls for:

  • Good jobs for all! Economic justice now – Make the banks and corporations pay for their crisis!
  • Money for education, health care, housing and all human needs, not for war and incarceration!
  • Justice for immigrants and all oppressed peoples! Stop the raids and deportations!

The protest coalition is complaining that the city of Charlotte has already denied their requests for permits to march. The city told the coalition that the DNC itself has reserved major parks in Charlotte during the convention.

Occupy Wall Street protesters sue New York City over pepper spray incident; in a viral online video, Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna was shown pepper-spraying several protesters involved in a march in September

(Reuters) – Two women caught on camera being doused with pepper spray by a New York police officer during an Occupy Wall Street march in September have sued the city, saying it failed to train police officers properly.

In a viral online video, Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna was shown pepper-spraying several protesters involved in a march in September, about a week after the Occupy Wall Street movement set up camp in a park in the city’s financial district.

The video helped draw attention to the Occupy protests, which spread throughout the country last fall with calls for greater economic equality before the movement lost some ground as many U.S. cities evicted them from tent camp footholds.

Eight Occupy Wall Street protesters arrested at Iowa Democratic Party headquarters, they were there to demand that President Obama veto NDAA and the omnibus spending bill

Eight people affiliated with Occupy Des Moines were arrested this afternoon at the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters in Des Moines.

The eight, whose hands were zip-tied behind their backs, were placed in a police wagon and transported to the Des Moines police station, where they were cited and released.

Each was to be charged with criminal trespassing, which is a misdemeanor. They did not resist arrest and were escorted out of the headquarters at 5661 Fleur Drive without incident.

Twelve people had walked into the headquarters late this morning. They were there to demand that President Obama veto the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the omnibus spending bill. Police told the protesters that they could either leave the headquarters or be arrested.

By 2:15 p.m., all protesters had left the building.

Norm Sterzenbach, executive director of the Iowa Democratic Party, said the protesters are continuing to deliver the same message they were brought earlier today to the Obama campaign office north of downtown Des Moines.

Demonstrators had been at Obama’s campaign headquarters much of the weekend. However, the office was closed and protesters were not able to talk personally with anyone about their concerns. Demonstrators decided to move the Obama campaign office occupation at approximately 11 to the Democratic party headquarters.

“They don’t want to be hear to listen to us, we decided to go to the state headquarters and make them listen to us,” Occupy Wall Street member Daniel Bragg said.

Occupy Wall Street Movie of the Month Streaming: V for Vendetta

With all that’s currently going on surrounding Obama, the uprising in America because of Occupy Wall Street, America becoming a police state, the National Defense Authorization Act, and SOPA, I think it’s only fitting to have a stream going on this site of the movie V for Vendetta.

This movie, as far fetched as it may be, is sadly becoming a reality in the United States. As a movie, this is as good as it gets.

The main character’s name is V”. He’s a shadowy masked figure who uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society. He rescues a girl (Natalie Portman) from the secret police who he also finds as an ally in his efforts to bring the system down. Enjoy!
